Tournament Time

The Berryville Lady Bobcats regained some lost momentum last week, just in time for their most important match of the season.

Berryville defeated Gentry and Green Forest on the road on back-to-back nights to close out the regular season and set up a showdown with Pea Ridge in the first round of the 4A-Northwest district tournament at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Prairie Grove High School.

The winner will advance to the district semifinals and secure a spot in next week’s 4A North regional tournament at Morrilton. The loser will be eliminated.

“We had a little rough patch,” said Berryville coach Kristin Whetham, whose team had lost four consecutive matches before defeating Gentry 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 on Monday, Oct. 7, and Green Forest 25-15, 25-6, 25-20 on Tuesday, Oct. 8. “So hopefully coming in with two wins builds our confidence for the district tournament.”

Included in that four-match losing streak was a loss at Pea Ridge in straight sets on Sept. 30. That left the teams with a split of their two regular-season matches, something Whetham hopes might bode well for the Lady Bobcats in the tournament.

“I think there’s an upside,” she said. “I don’t really want to go into a conference tournament having already won two games I guess, because it’s hard to beat a team three times.”

Green Forest, which lost its final regular-season match in three sets to Huntsville on Thursday, Oct. 10, will face the Lady Eagles again in a first-round tournament game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15. The winner will clinch a regional tournament bid.
