The Berryville Lady Bobcats made five three-pointers in the third quarter, then held on down the stretch for a 38-34 victory over the host team in the championship game of the annual Blue Eye Invitational on Friday, Dec. 6.
Junior guard Paige Thurman had three three-pointers and scored 10 points in the third quarter for Berryville, which outscored Blue Eye 22-16 for a 30-23 lead after trailing by one point at halftime.
“We had a nice run in the Blue Eye tournament,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “I’m really proud of how hard we played and how we hung in there against Blue Eye early and then just showed a lot of resiliency in that game and then played a really, really, really good third quarter. It was a tough game, tough environment. We really hung in there. It was a good win for us, beating Blue Eye.”
Thurman and classmate Kaylyn Smith, who made a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter, finished with 11 points each for Berryville.
The Lady Bobcats defeated Spokane, Mo., 89-33 in a firstround game on Monday, Dec. 2, then beat Sparta, Mo., 44-20, in a semifinal game on Thursday, Dec. 5.
Junior Hailey Howerton scored 24 points against Spokane, while senior Taelor Tomlinson added 17. Smith scored 12 points and junior Tessa Johnson had 11. Smith scored 16 points and Howerton added 13 in the victory over Sparta.
On Saturday, Dec. 7, the Lady Bobcats defeated Lead Hill 72-34 in the first round of the Anstaff Bank Green Forest Holiday Tournament. Tomlinson made four three-pointers and scored a gamehigh 20 points while senior Kynadee Hopper and sophomore Lexy Pittman added 14 apiece for Berryville.
In the Lady Bobcats’ past four games, seven players have at least one game with 11 points or more.
“We’re all capable of putting the ball in the basket a little bit,” Cornelison said. “We’re definitely not a one-man show. That’s for sure.” Berryville will play Huntsville in the semfinals of the Green
