The Berryville Lady Bobcats lost a pair of 4A-1 conference games last week, losing to Huntsville by a score of 48-38 on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Bobcat Arena and at Gentry, 5625, on Friday, Jan. 6.
Huntsville used a size advantage over the Lady Bobcats to get much of its point production close to the basket. The Lady Eagles led by 13 early in the second quarter before Berryville scored seven consecutive points to cut the deficit to six points at 34-28.
Senior Mia Thurman started the run for the Lady Bobcats by scoring off an offensive rebound. Classmate Hannah Youngblood followed with a deep three-pointer before sophomore Taelor Tomlinson dropped in a jumper to pull Berryville within six.
Huntsville responded with a 10-1 run, however, and led by at least 10 points the rest of the way.
“They were just really big and physical in the post and it gave us a lot of problems,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said.
Youngblood led Berryville with 12 points and freshman Kaylyn Smith added 11.
It was out of the frying pan and into the fire for the Lady Bobcats last Friday as they faced one of the top teams in Class 4A on its home court. Gentry took control early, leading 18-3 at the end of the first quarter and 34-8 at halftime.
Tomlinson hit two three-pointers and scored seven points to lead Berryville.
“Gentry’s real good,” Cornelison said. “They’re not pretty good. They’re real good. In my opinion, they’re a top-three team in the state.”
Berryville will travel to Gravette on Tuesday before hosting Pea Ridge on Friday at Bobcat Arena.
