Berryville coach Bryan Hutson says preseason practice is going well, but the Bobcats could use more depth.
“For those that show up it’s going pretty good,” Hutson said Friday, Aug. 5. “It’s numbers issues. Kind of the way it is here, I guess. We’ll know more next week and we’ll know more once school starts.”
The Bobcats are looking to replace 13 seniors from last season’s team, including several who played key roles along the offensive and defensive lines.
“We’re young up front,” Hutson said. “We’ve got one returning starter.”
That’s senior Kole Coatney, who Hutson said has been impressive in the preseason. Junior Talan Hill started the 2021 season finale against Green Forest in place of an injured senior. Coatney and Hill are the only Berryville linemen with starting experience. Senior Wesley Winter will start at center, but the other starters will likely be sophomores.
“I’m really pleased with our line so far,” Hutson said. “We’ve got some younger guys that have been stepping up. They’re just young.”
The competition for the starting quarterback spot is “still a battle,” Hutson said.
“It’s just going to be committee right now,” he said. “There’s not one guy that’s completely separated himself. We’ve got a month to figure it out before Game 1.”
Berryville will compete in a scrimmage at Hackett on Aug. 16.
“After that, we’ll probably know a lot more,” Hutson said.
The Bobcats open the season Sept. 2 at West Fork.
