Inside presence gives Lady Bobcats new dimension

Posted

The Berryville Lady Bobcats have been heavily reliant on their guards over the past several seasons.

And the Lady Bobcats have a group of talented guards again this year, with senior Paige Thurman coming off an All-State season as a junior and classmates Hailey Howerton and Tessa Johnson earning 4A-1 all-conference honors last season as Berryville made its first state tournament appearance since 2019.

But the Lady Bobcats have a new dimension this season as well, with the emergence of senior Chaney Fairweather and the promotion of 6-2 freshman Ellie Asbury to the varsity roster.

“We’re a little different than we have been the last few years,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “We’ve got a couple of post players. It’s kind of fun.”

Fairweather scored a team-high 16 points in Berryville’s season-opening 66-24 victory at Clarksville on Tuesday, Nov. 11, then added 18 to share high-point honors with Howerton as the Lady Bobcats beat Cotter 49-26 on Thursday, Nov. 13, at Bobcat Arena.

“She’s had a really good preseason and just carried right into the first two games,” Cornelison said. “I’ve been really pleased with her. She’s a difference maker when she wants to play like that. She’s just really come into her own. It’s been really nice.”

Asbury scored 14 points — all in the first half — against Clarksville and had seven points against Cotter.

“She’s a difference- maker around the rim for us,” Cornelison said. “There’s no doubt about that. Defensively, and scoring the basketball. She’s 6-2 and long and it’s pretty tough in girls basketball when you have that. She has a very high ceiling. She’s very skilled. I think the future’s pretty bright for her.”

The Lady Bobcats’ trio of senior guards are still just as capable as ever, as well. Against Cotter, Howerton had 10 of Berryville’s 19 firsthalf points, including a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter as the Lady Bobcats opened up a 19-10 halftime lead.

“I think we’ll be a tough matchup for people,” Cornelison said. Berryville hosted Eureka Springs on Monday, Nov. 17, at Bobcat Arena. The Lady Bobcats will play at Lincoln on Tuesday, Nov. 18, and at Valley Springs on Thursday, Nov. 20.
