The Berryville Bobcats missed the 2022 state soccer tournament after being upset in the second round of the district tournament.
That disappointment made the Bobcats even more determined to get to the state tournament this spring and that determination paid off as Berryville defeated defending Class 4A state champion Farmington 3-2 in the regular- season finale on Monday, April 24, at Bobcat Stadium. The win clinched the No. 2 seed for Berryville in the 4A West district tournament — and along with it a double-bye in the district tournament and an automatic bid to the Class 4A state tournament that starts next week at Joe T. Robinson High School in Little Rock.
Berryville led 2-0 at halftime behind goals from Francisco Tellez and Juan Perez. Farmington responded with a pair of second-half goals to tie the score at 2-2, but Jesus Monroy delivered the game-winning goal for the Bobcats with about 13 minutes remaining.
“It was a big game against the defeding state champs,” Berryville coach Grant Hutson said. “We knew that we could compete with anybody in 4A and all those hours and hours of practice finally paid off. … Last year, the kids were distraught because we had such high expectations and we ended up getting upset in the district tournament. So they committed themselves to make sure that never happened again. … Winning that game was huge for the kids. Hopefully we can build a bunch of momentum off that going into postseason play.”
Berryville hosted Farmington again Monday in the semifinals of the district tournament.
First-round games in the Class 4A state tournament are scheduled for Thursday, May 11.
