Bobcats hold off Springdale JV

Berryville boys soccer coach Grant Hutson has intentionally built a difficult nonconference schedule for his team, loaded with Class 6A opponents.

The idea is to get the Bobcats ready for conference play, even if they take their lumps for now.

But it’s nice to win one against the big schools every now and then, too. That was the case on Thursday, March 30, as the Bobcats defeated Springdale’s junior varsity 3-2.

“It was an extremely competitive game,” Hutson said. “It was a really, really good test for our kids. They played with passion that we saw earlier in the year. It was a really good boost for the kids going into conference play.”

Berryville led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Francisco Tellez. The Bobcats made it 2-0 when David Tapia scored off an assist from Juan Perez with about 13 minutes remaining in the second half.

Springdale scored twice down the stretch but Perez found Tapia open with about 10 minutes remaining for the Bobcats’ third goal and a 3-1 lead that proved to be enough.

“There were four goals in about six minutes at the end of the game,” Hutson said. “I think we got a little comfortable when we were up two goals, which caused some mishaps to happen. But it’s how you finish a game and we finished it really well, so we were happy about the outcome.”

Berryville will play at Gentry on Wednesday before hosting Prairie Grove on Thursday.
