James Evan McDevitt, a cherished family man, and friend to many, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2024, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Born on January 11, 1966, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to John and Clyda (Walker) McDevitt. James lived a life marked by love, dedication, and a warm sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him.
On September 5, 1987, he was united in marriage with Tammy Butterfield McDevitt at Thorn Crown Chapel in Eureka Springs. Years later James had two children, Madison and Malachi. He was a wonderful father who enjoyed spending time with his children, giving them endless love, laughter, and memories to cherish. He expressed his endless love for Tammy in many ways such as playing love songs. His role as a grandfather to Adalynn and Baylor was one of his greatest joys and he cherished every moment spent with them. Family trips included Silver Dollar City, Turpentine Creek, Christ Statue, Beaver Lake, Roaring River, Bella Vista and Eureka Springs trails and waterfalls.
James was known for his hardworking nature, intelligence, creativity, and his ability to make anyone around him smile. James’s love for the outdoors was evident in the beautiful yard he created with his wife in the quiet woods of Eureka Springs, where they greatly enjoyed wildlife and spending time with their fur-babies. An avid fisherman and mushroom hunter, he found peace and solace in nature’s embrace.
James’s professional life was marked by his role at Carroll Electric and Bella Vista Water, where his leadership and expertise were greatly valued. He was also a part of the team at Onyx Cave, a job he often referred to as his dream job, where countless customers absolutely loved James for his engaging tours and captivating storytelling. He studied extensively to provide an educational experience of the caves.
Music and sports were among James’s many passions. An enthusiast of basketball, the Dallas Mavericks were his favorite team. He was exceptional at playing the guitar, which was a source of personal enjoyment but also a delight to those who listened. He loved hard rock and played in a band.
Those mourning his passing include his wife, Tammy; son, Malachi McDevitt; daughter, Madison Kay McDevitt; grandchildren, Adalynn Brooke Myers and Baylor Lee Threikeld; sisters, Deborah Beever and husband William, Denise Waldrip and husband Rod, Dawn Fergerson and husband Brent; brother, John McDevitt IV; aunt, Joyce Wiebbecke and husband Tom; uncle, Charles Walker and wife Gerri; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. We will forever love and miss him, who was taken too soon. He awaits us at Heavens Gate, until we meet again.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Clyda McDevitt.
