Curtis David Matthews, Sr.

  Matthews

Curtis David Matthews, Sr. was born August 1, 1963, in Big Spring, Texas to Clarence and Margaret (Barnfield) Matthews. Curtis passed away January 1, 2024, in Fayetteville at the age of 60.

Curtis loved the Lord fiercely and he made sure you knew it. He discipled anyone who would allow it and did this about three days every week. He cared deeply about the heart and soul of a person and lived to ensure that people he knew understood the love God has for them. He also guaranteed the people he discipled experienced true refinement if they were willing. Curtis wanted them to truly learn and understand the Gospel. He ushered countless lives to Christ. Curtis expected the Lord to reveal himself to those he tutored and invited his brothers and sisters into true gospel living. He prayed fervently for whoever needed it and truly believed in the power of bringing ourselves, our desires, and our deepest needs before the King of Heaven and Earth.

Curtis loved the Cardinals and the Razorbacks almost as much as Jesus…almost. Many of us, though, know how hard it is to be a Razorback fan. He knew so many random facts about sports and usually a conversation with Curtis included both Jesus and the sport of the season whether you cared or not. He was quirky and endearing enough that you were willing to listen.

He also fiercely loved his family. He was married to the love of his life. He was so proud of his kids. His grandkids and bonus grandkids brought out the best of him.

He made us laugh. He made us want to kick him sometimes. He made us want to know and love Jesus more. And now he has made us miss him. We expect him to greet us whenever we might join him in Heaven and we know on Monday morning he heard the words from the Creator of Light, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

He is survived by his wife, Lydia Matthews of the home. Curtis is also survived by his son, C.J. Matthews and wife Erica; daughter, Meghan Scholtens; sister, Kimberly Bristow and husband Burke; grandchildren, Shae and Shannon Matthews.

Curtis is preceded by his parents, Clarence and Margaret Matthews, Jr., and his sister, Cindy Matthews.
