The number of active cases of COVID-19 in Carroll County last week rose at the rate of approximately one per day, with 42 reported by the Arkansas Department of Health on Friday. Statewide, the number of active cases rose 19 percent in five days, rising to 5,880 on Friday.

Potholes were a topic of discussion during the regular meeting of the Berryville City Council on Tuesday, June 7. Prompted by council member Jason Williams, the initial discussion centered on what Williams described as “a pretty big pothole on Elm Street.” Mayor Tim McKinney said the city was aware of the issue.

The Green Forest School board met for a special business meeting on June 2 and used the opportunity to deal with a number of personnel matters as well as approve the purchase of new cafeteria tables. Before meeting in an executive session, the board approved the purchase of 40 new tables for approximately $75,000 from Palmer Hamilton LLC, a furniture manufacturer based in Elkhorn, Wis., in addition to hearing the first read on a number of newly received policies.

Thinking that the device used to record a recent special meeting had been turned off after adjourning, members of the Eureka Springs Cemetery Commission continued to meet and discuss commission business, including calling a newly hired sexton “two-faced” and a recently terminated employee a “narcissist.”

Carroll County Newspapers, publisher of the Carroll County News, filed an official complaint with Carroll County prosecuting attorney Tony Rogers about a recent meeting of the Eureka Springs Cemetery Commission.

The Arkansas Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a Eureka Springs company that argued it was improperly denied a license to operate a medical marijuana dispensary. Carroll County Holdings Inc., doing business as Eureka Green, filed suit in June 2020 against the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration, the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Division and the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission.

An attorney representing a group of plaintiffs in a civil lawsuit in connection with the Eureka Springs City Advertising and Promotion Commission filed a second amended complaint last week, listing a litany of new allegations and adding the commission’s former executive director as a defendant.

A special prosecutor last week charged Robert Kennedy, a former candidate for Carroll County sheriff, with a single felony count of terroristic threatening stemming from his arrest on April 25. Kennedy was arrested after an altercation with his brother, a deputy sheriff, at their mother’s home on Carroll County Road 107 west of Eureka Springs.
