The Green Forest Tigers had a busy week to close out the regular season, playing three games in five days.
The highlight for Green Forest was a 63-46 nonconference victory over Flippin on Monday, Feb. 6, at the Grim Gym.
Green Forest controlled that game from the opening minutes, rolling to a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and widening its advantage to 33-9 by halftime.
The Tigers dominated the inside outscoring Flippin 30-14 in the paint and grabbing 13 offensive rebounds. Green Forest also forced 32 turnovers by the Bobcats.
Senior guard Ali Cabrera led the way offensively for Green Forest, making five of his 10 three-point attempts on the way to a 22-point scoring night. Senior guard Tony Gonzalez added 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals, while the Tigers’ third senior guard, Jay Pope, had 13 points and seven rebounds.
On Tuesday, Feb. 7, the Tigers lost a close conference game at Elkins, losing 49-43 as a second-half comeback fell just short.
Elkins opened the game by outscoring Green Forest 20-2 in the first quarter. The Elks led 32-13 at halftime before the Tigers cut the deficit to 39-27 at the end of the third quarter.
Cabrera scored 18 points for Green Forest, again making five three-pointers. Pope added 14 points, five rebounds and five assists.
On Friday, Feb. 10, the Tigers lost to Valley Springs 77-65 on Senior Night at the Grim Gym. The Panthers led 34-32 at halftime but outscored Green Forest 22-10 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 14 points.
Green Forest shot 60 percent from two-point range and 42.6 percent overall and committed just 12 turnovers but were whistled for 24 personal fouls compared with 12 for Valley Springs. The Panthers outscored Green Forest 28-5 from the free-throw line.
Pope had a solid all-around game for the Tigers with 21 points, six rebounds and six assists. Gonzalez added 15 points, five assists and three steals, while Cabrera scored 12 points.
Green Forest’s girls lost to Flippin, 60-20, then lost 50-32 at Elkins. The Lady Tigers fell to Valley Springs 54-24 last Friday. Gina Gonzalez led Green Forest with five points against Valley Springs.
Both Green Forest teams will play in the 3 A-1 District Tournament this week at West Fork. The Green Forest boys (9-17) are the sixth seed and were scheduled to face No. 7 seed West Fork at 7:30 p.m. Monday, after deadline for this edition.
The Lady Tigers (6-18) are seeded fifth and will play fourth seed Elkins at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
