Wilson, Bobcats dominate Saints

Posted

The Berryville Bobcats wanted to give their six seniors a lifelong memory on Senior Night at Bobcat Arena. They also wanted to play well and build some momentum heading into this week’s 4A-1 district tournament.

Check, and check. Senior Jake Wilson poured in 35 points and the Bobcats dominated Shiloh Christian from the start in a 66-47 victory on Friday, Feb. 10.

“Our kids played really well,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said. “I was really proud of their effort, really proud of how they came out and just from start to finish played really well.”

Wilson had 25 points in the first half, including 14 in the second quarter as Berryville extended a 20-12 lead to 40-24 by halftime.

He added eight points in the third quarter, then left the game along with the Bobcats’ other four senior starters after scoring on a drive to the basket to put Berryville up 60-31 just 13 seconds into the fourth quarter.

“Thirty-five in three quarters is a pretty good night, for sure,” Compton said. “The long season and just putting so much on the starting five, our legs are getting a little bit weary, so to speak. And Jake had had a couple of games that for most people would be good — 15 or 16-point games. And then he’s back in action Friday night getting 35. It was good to see him back on track.”

The Bobcats will host the district tournament this week. The No. 4 seed, Berryville will play at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Gravette and Gentry.

The Bobcats went 4-0 against the Lions and Pioneers this season, including a 57-49 home victory on Tuesday, Feb. 7, when Wilson and classmate Nate Allen each scored 16 See points and fellow senior D.J. Colbert added 13.

“I really like the fact that we’re at home,” Compton said. “I think that’s going to give us a really big advantage. I think our community will be there in full force to support us and give us some added energy. I feel like we’ll probably play Gravette again. And even though we’ve beaten them twice, it’s hard to beat somebody three times. At least we’re familiar with them and we’re going to use that as a positive. We’re just going to sell out and do everything we can to win.”

A victory in Wednesday’s game would ensure the Bobcats a trip to the 4A-North regional tournament next week in Morrilton.
