Weather forces changes to meeting schedules

Posted

Several inches of snow fell across Carroll County on Tuesday, Feb. 18, accompanied by temperatures that remained below the freezing mark and even dipped below zero at times over the next few days.

The winter weather forced the postponement of several scheduled meetings, beginning with the Carroll County Quorum Court meeting that had been slated to begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18. That meeting has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25. Among other agenda items, the county’s 11 Justices of the Peace are expected to consider a proposed emergency ordinance that would impose a temporary moratorium on the construction of commercial wind and solar energy facilities in the county.

The Berryville City Council’s regular meeting that had been scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, also was rescheduled. The council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25. The council is expected to consider a proposal by Mayor Tim McKinney to hold a special election asking voters to extend the city’s half-cent sales and use tax by 15 years, until Sept. 30, 2045.

McKinney told the council at its last meeting, on Feb. 4, that extending the tax would allow the city to issue bonds for various improvement projects. The bonds would then be repaid using revenue generated through the sales and use tax.

An extension of the tax would need approval from voters in the city. In addition to a proposed ordinance that would extend the tax, McKinney also presented council members at the Feb. 4 meeting with a separate proposal for a special election to be held on May 13. McKinney indicated that the council would read the proposals three times and vote on them at its next meeting.

The Berryville School Board, which normally meets on the third Monday of each month, had pushed its monthly meeting to Tuesday, Feb. 18, due to classes being out for President’s Day.

Winter weather, however, caused the cancellation of classes on that day — and the remainder of the week — and the monthly board meeting was rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 24.

Several inches of snow and icy road conditions led to four snow days for students last week. Students in Berryville and Eureka Springs returned to class on Monday, Feb. 24 and Green Forest students returned on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
