Bobby Harris is a native son of Berryville who went on to have a long and successful career in the hotel and casino industry in Las Vegas.
Now, Harris is back in his hometown and he’s working to address an issue that has had a profound impact on his family.
Harris spoke to the Berryville City Council at its June 4 meeting about his idea for what he described as an “organic natural healing environment” to help people who suffer from depression and other mental health issues. Harris told the council that two of his siblings took their own lives after struggling with depression.
“My vision is what we’ll do is we’ll have a walkway that’s just full of flowers,” he said, adding that he can foresee churches and civic groups volunteering to maintain portions of the walkway, which would be constructed near the Berryville Community Center.
Eventually, Harris said, he’d like to see an amphitheater included in the project, although he said the project would be constructed in phases. He asked the city council to give its blessing for him to begin pursuing corporate sponsorships to support the project.
The four city council members and Mayor Tim McKinney all indicated their support for Harris’ efforts.
