Veterans group lends a hand

Posted

A severe storm late last month left a local elderly veteran with a sizable tree partially resting on top of his house.

A concerned neighbor asked for assistance in clearing the fallen tree.

“My neighbor’s house had a tree fall on it during the storms,” wrote Corey Divine in a Facebook post. “I feel like the trunk should be left to a pro so the house doesn’t receive more damage, but does anyone want to help me clear some limbs ... I have a saw.

“This man is pretty much homebound, an old vet, frequently in and out of the hospital. I want to help.”

Not long after Divine’s post, local veterans group Recon VI-Operation All In was contacted about the situation, and group members were eager to pitch in.

“We live in an amazing community that will step up and help its neighbors in times of need,” said Recon VI president Vince Eastwod. “I was returning from a speaking engagement in Stratford, Okla., when this call for help went out and I am so proud of my family and our team at Recon VI for stepping up and helping out one of our local veterans in such quick order.” Among those who gathered to lend a hand was Travis Wolfe of Wolfe Tree Service, who made it to the home by noon the day after the storm.

After assessing the situation, Wolfe, vice president of Recon VI, informed the resident that he should vacate the house until the tree was removed and it was safe for him to be there.

He then returned with his bucket truck and other Recon VI team members and they, along with a few neighbors, went to work removing the tree and debris from the home. After the tree was removed from the home, other community members stepped up and removed the remainder of the cut-up debris from the property.

“Travis had two daughters in the local pageant that started at 3 p.m. and he was still able to get there in plenty of time for the start of the pageant,” Eastwood said. “Mark Pepple returned Wolfe’s bucket to his home so Travis was not late and Shane Eastwood and his boys also came and helped, along with my wife, Elisa, and daughter Taylor.”

Eastwood said he didn’t know the names of all the others who lent a hand, but expressed his gratitude.

“We are thankful for everyone who helped,” Eastwood said.
