Just five traffic accidents were reported to the Berryville Police Department in the month of April, chief Robert Bartos told the Berryville City Council at its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 20, down from 18 in April 2024.
Council member Linda Riddlesperger asked Bartos if the April number was a record low.
“It’s pretty low,” Bartos answered. “We usually average about 13 a month.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in the single digits,” Mayor Tim McKinney said.
Bartos said Berryville police issued 108 citations in April, up from 98 during the same month a year earlier. A total of 43 offenses were reported, fewer than half the number — 93 — reported in April 2024 but Bartos said there was a caveat to that report.
“Our offenses have been down, but the reports and things we’ve had have been a lot more severe and violent,” the chief said.
The police department had a clearance rate of 91 percent in April, Bartos said, and took in $985 in fines and bonds.
Also at the May 20 meeting, the council approved three readings of an emergency ordinance amending the city’s 2024 budget in a common “cleanup” procedure, and approved a request submitted by the Berryville Kiwanis Club for the use of George Pond Park for the clubs annual kids fishing derby on Saturday, June 14. The Berryville City Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, at City Hall.
