Basketball season has arrived for the Eureka Springs Highlanders and Lady Highlanders.
All four Eureka Springs teams will be in action Tuesday, Oct. 17, traveling to Jasper for the regular season opener.
Coach Brian Rambo’s high school boys will have a new look and a new style this season with a young roster. The Highlanders don’t have the same size on the inside as they have the past few years, so they’ll look to speed up the tempo.
“The kids are excited,” Rambo said. “They’re tired of practicing against each other. It gets to be a grind. They’re ready to play some other teams, so we’re excited.”
The Highlanders will get right to business with three games in four days to start the regular season, with a trip to St. Paul on Thursday, Oct. 19, before the home opener on Friday, Oct. 20, against Omaha.
“We’re going to try and play as many games as we can,” Rambo said. “That’s really the one thing that my basketball team really lacks is that varsity experience. You really can’t get that in practice. You’ve got to get out and play as many games as you can.”
The Highlanders will count heavily on senior Michael Lester on both ends of the floor. Lester can shoot from the perimeter but also has the strength to be effective on the inside both offensively and defensively.
“He’s worked a lot in the offseason on his body and he’s a physically imposing kind of guy,” Rambo said. “He’s going to be a huge part of our basketball team. I hate to say this, because he’s only about 5-10 but he’s going to be our big guy. He kind of likes that just mucking the game up and making it a physical game. That’s kind of his personality a little bit. Don’t get me wrong; he can take you off the dribble, step outside and shoot the basketball. He likes that part of it, too, but he really likes the physicality and the contact part of the game. It’s just kind of his personality, so I think it’s going to be a good fit for him.”
With such a young roster, Rambo fully expects some growing pains.
“We’re going to have days where we look really, really good and we’ll have days where we don’t look as good, because we’re so young and inexperienced,” he said. “So it’s going to be an emotional swing early in the year. But I truly believe in this team. We’ve got great kids and high character. I really feel like once we get to Christmas, we’re going to be a pretty good basketball team.”
