To steal a phrase from Meatloaf, two out of three ain’t bad. Still, Green Forest basketball coach Ben McBryde would have preferred three out of three.
McBryde’s Tigers picked up a pair of victories last week, beating Eureka Springs 60-51 on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 2, and topping Omaha 58-45 on Saturday, Dec. 6, in the first round of the 69th Annual Anstaff Bank Holiday Tournament on their home floor in the Grim Gym.
It was the one that got away that aggravated McBryde. On Wednesday, Dec. 3, the Tigers lost to Cedarville 48-46 in a consolation game in the Duel at the Dome tournament at West Fork.
The Tigers led that game 38-30 after outscoring Cedarville 17-7 in the third quarter, but let it slip away late.
“We should have been 3-0,” said Mc-Bryde, who is in his first season at Green Forest. “But when you’re young, you have those ups and downs. It’s just learning how to win and be consistent at it.”
Junior Collin Atchison led the Tigers with 18 points in the win at Eureka Springs, while Grady Massengale and Briceton Henson added 12 points each and Jace Meador scored 10. Green Forest won that game by outscoring the Highlanders 20-9 in the fourth quarter.
Massengale scored a team-high 17 points in the loss to Cedarville, then had 18 in the victory over Omaha, with Henson adding 14 — including four three-pointers —and Meador scoring 11.
The Tigers will face Lead Hill in the semifinals of the holiday tournament at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Grim Gym.
