Tigers take on summer gantlet

The Green Forest Tigers haven’t shied away from tough competition this summer.

The Tigers recently competed in the Southwest Elite 7-on-7 tournament hosted by Shiloh Christian in Springdale, where they held their own against teams representing larger schools.

“We played the whole Oklahoma 6A schedule, it seemed like,” Green Forest coach Greg Tibbitt said. “We played a gantlet. Stillwater ended up finishing second in the tournament. They beat us 24-17. With eight seconds left in the game, we had the ball with a chance to go score.”

The ultimate goal, Tibbitt said, was to improve and prepare for the upcoming season.

“That’s what I try to tell our guys,” he said. “We saw a lot of talent.”

One position group that didn’t get as much benefit from 7-on-7 is the guys up front.

“That’s the bad part,” Tibbitt said. “They kind of get lost in that summer mix.”

Tibbitt said the Tigers planned to participate in a couple of summer team camps but one was canceled because of the heat and Green Forest had to skip another camp because it didn’t have enough players.

“So (the linemen) haven’t been able to put the pads on and get the extra work,” Tibbitt said. “But they’ve been committed to the weight room and they’ve been committed to running and getting in shape.”

Green Forest will host West Fork on Aug. 26.
