Tigers split with Yellville-Summit, Jasper

Posted

The Green Forest Tigers had their most successful season in more than a decade in 2021-22.

This season, the Tigers are looking to build on that success.

Green Forest opened the season with a 73-38 victory over Yellville- Summit on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the Grim Gym.

The Tigers took control from the start, racing to a 14-point halftime lead at 37-23. Green Forest put the game away by piling up 33 points in the third quarter to extend its lead to 40 points at 70-30.

Senior guard Ali Cabrera made seven three-pointers for the Tigers and finished with a game-high 26 points. His backcourt mate, senior Tony Gonzalez, added 18 points.

Another Green Forest senior guard, Jay Pope, added nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Altogether, Green Forest outrebounded Yellville-Summit 46-22. The Tigers had 26 offensive rebounds.

“We had a good game that night,” Green Forest coach Shane Compton said. “We shot the ball well and we played well as a team that night. If we do that, we’ve got a chance to be pretty good this year.”

On Friday, Nov. 11, visiting Jasper defeated Green Forest 7645.

Jasper outrebounded Green Forest 36-29 and took advantage of 18 turnovers by the Tigers. The Pirates also had a big edge at the free-throw line, making 28 of 34 attempts compared with one of six for Green Forest.

“They scored 27 more points than us on the free-throw line,” Compton said. “As far as point differential, that was the difference in the game. It was a 10-point game with two minutes left in the third quarter and I’ve got three of my starters on the bench. One had fouled out and two were sitting over there with four fouls. That’s kind of when they ran away from us was after that.”

Green Forest struggled from beyond the three-point line, making six in 31 attempts.

Cabrera led the Tigers with 14 points and five assists.

Despite the loss, Compton said he’s pleased with the Tigers’ performance — and their potential.

“Jasper’s ranked in the top 10 in the state in Class A and I feel like we’re as good or better than them,” Compton said. “We had difficulty stopping their two best players, but a lot of teams are having a problem stopping them. I feel good good about where we’re at and where we’re going.”

Green Forest will travel to Cotter on Friday.
