Tigers split two against Flippin

Anytime Mason Meador is on the pitching mound for the Green Forest Tigers, coach Brandon Stone feels pretty good about his team’s chances to win.

“That’s our biggest strength,” Stone said. “If he’s on the mound and throwing well, I like our chances against anybody.”

In the Tigers’ 5-1 victory over Flippin in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday, March 6, Meador showed why. The 5-10, 140-pound sophomore turned in a dominant performance over six innings, striking out 12 batters while allowing just two hits and a single unearned run.

Freshman Kasen Robinson relieved Meador in the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning.

“They’re going to be a good 1-2 combination for the next three years,” Stone said.

While Meador and Robinson were holding the Bobcats’ bats at bay, senior Ryan Bruegel supplied plenty of offense for the Tigers. With Flippin leading 1-0 and the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Bruegel ripped a triple to right field to put Green Forest ahead to stay at 3-1.

Meador had two of Green Forest’s six hits. Flippin won the second game of the doubleheader 17-2 in four innings. Meador had a solo home run for the Tigers.

Stone said the Tigers have a young roster this season with five freshmen and four sophomores joing two juniors and four seniors.

Green Forest was scheduled to host West Fork on Monday.
