The Green Forest Tigers dropped a doubleheader to West Fork on Monday, March 13, losing the opener 19-1 and the nightcap 11-0.
But Green Forest coach Brandon Stone said the second game was much more competitive than the final score would indicate.
“That was a real well-pitched game on both sides,” Stone said. “We just couldn’t score. But that was a much better game for us. We had a shot in that one. That’s a good sign that our kids didn’t quit.”
Sophomore Mason Meador kept Green Forest close by holding West Fork to two runs through the first four innings. Meador allowed three hits and six walks while striking out seven West Fork batters.
With his pitch count at 95, however, Meador left the mound after the fourth and West Fork broke through with nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Green Forest was hitless, with its only two baserunners reaching via walk. In the first game, Meador’s RBI single accounted for Green Forest’s only run.
Stone said he told his players to focus on improving as the season goes along.
“I want to play our best baseball at the end of April,” he said. “Not the middle of March.”
