Tigers show potential in early going

Posted

Don’t read too much into the Green Forest Tigers’ 0-2 start to the 2023-24 basketball season.

The Tigers have several players just moving over from football and their first two opponents have been solid teams.

Green Forest opened the season with a 45-39 home loss to Cotter on Tuesday, Nov. 7, then lost at Jasper on 77-62 on Friday, Nov. 10.

“We’re still in football mode, I think,” said Green Forest coach Shane Compton, whose team will host Berryville on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Grim Gym. “We have several guys that just got out of football, so it’s going to take us a few weeks to get their legs back under them and playing like we’re capable. … I’m guessing that Cotter and Jasper are both going to be regional (tournament) teams this year. So we started off with some fairly heavy hitters.”

In the season-opening loss to Cotter, Green Forest led 30-27 after three quarters.

“I had a couple guys foul out and we’re just not very deep this year, so that hurt,” Compton said.

Sebastian Holsted led the Tigers with 14 points against Cotter and grabbed eight rebounds, while Zak Watson added eight points and eight rebounds and Aaron Strain also scored eight and had seven rebounds.

At Jasper, Brayden Compton — the coach’s son — scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting and pulled down 12 rebounds while Halsted made three three-pointers and scored 15. Junior Mason Meador had 10 points while Watson scored six and grabbed eight rebounds.
