The Green Forest Tigers didn’t come anywhere close to upsetting 4A-1 conference leader Elkins last week, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t some positives for the Tigers.
Elkins defeated visiting Green Forest 42-7 to remain unbeaten in conference play. The Elks’ point total was their lowest in five conference games, however. Elkins had scored an average of 62 points in its first four conference games, including an 83-6 win over Lincoln on Oct. 10.
“You don’t want to celebrate a loss, but we played really well,” said first-year Green Forest coach Dalton Ewing. “Our guys were real excited. They know what kind of players Elkins has. But we made them earn it. Our guys are still very confident. They’re all feeling good and like where we are right now.”
Green Forest’s lone touchdown came on a 6-yard run by junior Ywa Hay Moo.
With two weeks remaining in the regular season, Green Forest (3-5, 1-4) remains in the hunt for the conference’s fifth playoff spot. The Tigers can clinch that spot with victories over Huntsville (3-5,. 2-3) on Friday, Oct. 31, and Berryville on Nov. 7. Both those games will be played at Tiger Stadium.
“This game this week kind of decides a lot of it, because Huntsville beat Berryville earlier in the year,” Ewing said. “This game decides a lot of what happens. If we lose, Huntsville’s in. So our guys have got to show up and we’ve got to play well.”
