Tigers hope to get well

Having nine players sidelined is enough of a challenge. Taking on one of the state’s top Class 4A teams on the road at the same time is just asking too much.

A short-handed Green Forest squad fought for four quarters Friday night but couldn’t slow down undefeated Elkins as the Elks rolled to a 73-14 win on their home field.

“We had nine kids not dressed, which never helps,” Green Forest coach Greg Tibbitt said. “And they’re good enough as it is, so that didn’t help at all.”

Elkins led 66-0 in the third quarter before Green Forest junior Ridge Gordon- Swofford scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Tibbitt said the Tigers had a chance to stay close early.

“We’re down 15-0 and we take the ball and drive it inside the 30-yard line,” he said.

“We got the ball on the 28-yard line and just could not convert. We just kind of stalled out right there. And I’m not dumb enough to sit here and say we’d have won the game if we convert right there. But, you know, I think it’s different. I think if you down and score, make it 15-6 at the worst, I think it’s a whole different ballgame.”

Swofford, who had 90 yards rushing on 23 carries, caught a 17yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Mason Meador and the Tigers converted a two-point try to make it 66-8 in the fourth quarter.

After a 68-yard touchdown run by Elkins, Gordon-Swofford broke free on a 32yard touchdown run for the final points of the game.

Tibbitt said some of the Tigers’ injured players should be healthy enough to return this week, including two who had been in concussion protocol after a loss to Gentry on Oct. 6.

“They should be released on Tuesday, if I’m not mistaken,” Tibbitt said.

Green Forest (2-5, 0-4 4A-1) will host Gravette on Friday, Oct. 20, at Tiger Stadium. The Lions (4-3, 3-1) are riding a threegame conference winning streak, including a 56-0 shutout of Berryville last week.

“They’re a solid football team,” Tibbitt said. “They’re really well-coached, physical up front. They’re just a solid high school football team.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
