If you read this column often at all, you know how I feel about cold weather in particular and winter in general. I can’t stand either one of them, except for the saving grace of basketball season.
But the days are already getting longer and 2 a.m. Sunday, March 8, will mark a big milestone. That’s when Daylight Saving Time officially begins. That should push sunset past 7 p.m. and it won’t be long until it’s after 8.
I turned 56 in September. I sense that my age is part of the reason I seem to despise winter more each year. It also might help explain why I caught myself the other day, daydreaming about mowing the yard.
As spring takes hold and the days get longer and warmer, I’ll be itching to pull out my fishing pole and see if I can catch anything. And of course, basketball season will give way to baseball. I’m not going to predict that my Cubs will win the World Series this year, but I will say I expect them to win a division championship and be a contender for the big trophy.
I’ve noticed, too, that my bedtime seems to be much earlier during the winter months. I attribute that to the fact that it gets dark so stinking early. Pitch black at 5:30 p.m.? No, thank you. I can’t wait for the day when the sun is up until 8:30.
One thing I promise not to do is complain about the heat. After griping about the cold for the past several weeks, it would be disingenuous to turn around and grouse that it’s suddenly too hot.
The return of Daylight Saving Time also reminds me of one of the bigger mistakes I’ve made in my time at the Carroll County News. A few years ago, I published a graphic on the front page of the newspaper reminding everyone to set their clocks back an hour for Daylight Saving Time. By the time I realized my mistake, the paper was already printed and it was too late to do anything but admit my error.
Fortunately, everyone was good-natured about it. Probably because their mood was improved by all that extra sunlight.
So, don’t forget: Set your clocks forward an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday. Then join me in rejoicing. Here comes the sun!
