One of my favorite parts of this job is visiting with people who come into our office to talk about whatever’s on their mind.
I try to always visit and say thank you when people come into the office, no matter why they are here. They are the people who make this newspaper possible and we want to make sure they know how grateful we are.
Now, different people come to our office for different reasons.
Sometimes, they want to give me a news tip. Sometimes, they want to renew their subscriptions. Sometimes, they want to just shoot the breeze. Sometimes they even disagree with something they’ve read in this space.
And sometimes they bring me treats. Those are my favorite times.
I’ve struck up a friendship with a dear, sweet lady who is a regular and devoted reader. Miss Loretta is 85 years old, although you’d never guess it. She still drives a tractor, still cuts her own grass, still goes wherever she wants to go in her Toyota pickup and still makes the best cinnamon rolls I’ve ever tasted (and apple butter, and blackberry jam AND jelly and canned green beans). She always insists that I share with Lisa. Lisa also insists I share. She’s a big fan of Miss Loretta, too.
I always look forward to her visits, although as much as I enjoy the treats, I enjoy visiting with Miss Loretta even more.
One of the first times I talked to Miss Loretta on the phone, she explained to me that some folks had asked her why she still mows her own yard. She told them she’ll stop when she gets old. That’s the kind of positive attitude we all should have. And it’s contagious. Spend a few minutes with Miss Loretta, and you can’t help but find yourself in a better mood.
I missed a call from Miss Loretta earlier today (Monday). She was letting me know that she’ll visit on Wednesday. I’m looking forward to some home cooking, a friendly visit and a dose of inspiration.
Thank you, Miss Loretta!
