Many of you in the community know Julia Borkowski, the young woman whose vision and energy are responsible for this weekend’s Berryville Film Festival.
I’ve known Julia for a while now. I first met her outside of work, but it didn’t take long for me to realize this was a young lady who could be an asset to us at the newspaper. I hired Julia first to handle our social media and online presence and later added retail sales to her plate.
Julia brings a positive energy and attitude to everything she does, and I’m sure the Film Festival will be a big success. I’ve watched for months as she worked to make it a reality and I’ll be rooting for her.
My wife and I attended the Bentonville Film Festival earlier this year. It’s astounding to think that Berryville will have its own event like that, even though it will be smaller — for now; don’t bet against Julia and Berryville turning this event into something big.
There’s a little something for everyone at the Film Festival, with a total of 38 movies — including some featuring local actors. Julia herself is a talented actress who has shot multiple films just this year. She’s promised to include me in her thank-you speech when she hoists her first Oscar.
The Berryville Libary is joining in the fun by a sponsoring a workshop for young screenwriters and showing a family movie Saturday night on the Berryville Public Square.
I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to attend the festival in person. It’s become a running joke between Julia and me that I’m always out of town when she has her events. I promise that isn’t intentional. I’ll be in Colorado this weekend celebrating my 55th birthday and hopefully watching the Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies. But I did vow to Julia to proudly wear my Berryville Film Festival T-shirt while I’m there.
I have no doubt that the festival will be a success, and I’ll do my best not to be out of pocket for the 2025 event.
Until then, y’all please turn out to support Julia and the Berryville Film Festival. It’s a big deal for our community and Julia deserves our support.
