Stubbs brothers receive Carla Youngblood Award

Posted

The Friends of the Berryville Library recently presented the Carla Youngblood Community Spirit Award during the Peace, Love & a New Library Festival.

The award was started in 2019 to honor Carla Youngblood for her years of service to the community through her work at the Berryville Library. This award is intended to shine light on others who tirelessly give their time and talent, often with little or no recognition, making Berryville a better place to live, work or play.

Steve and David Stubbs are the recipients of this award for the second quarter. They were nominated by their sister Carol Ann Stubbs, who knows firsthand the many reasons they deserve to be recipients of this award.

Stubbs Grocery is celebrating 70 years of serving this community, opening the family store at 602 N. Springfield St. in 1953.

Luther Stubbs, with his wife, Lennis, started a chain of love that exists to this day. It is a little store with a big heart. Because of Steve and David Stubbs and their sense of family duty, Stubbs Grocery is still here today evoking memories of days gone by for all who enter. The sports memorabilia is most noticeable when entering the store. Lifelong St. Louis Cardinal and Arkansas Razorback fans, Steve and David know the history, the stats, the behind-the-scenes action for both teams and can answer just about any question.

Following in the footsteps of his father, David loves gardening and does an excellent job juggling orders and paying bills. And Steve has a memory unlike any other, and in addition to enjoying sports, also enjoys horror movies, music, pop culture, heavy metal and more. Steve began working at the store 42 years ago making sandwiches for most everyone who lives here or has traveled through the area. Steve has a canny sense of remembering what kind of sandwich customers like.

Keeping Stubbs Grocery open throughout the years has not been easy. When their parents began having health issues, Steve and David accepted their call to the community to keep the store going because that is what their parents wanted.

Luther Stubbs never wanted customers to leave the store hungry or sad. Steve tells great jokes and David is known to let a customer slide if change is an issue. Smiles, sports talk, gardening tips, Berryville Bobcats, remembering those who passed away, are all good stories shared with customers at the little store with a big heart.

Steve and David were given this award for their love of community, for keeping the history alive of a family dream started by Luther with a promise to him and the community to keep the doors open for as long as they could.

Steve and David prepared all the sack lunches that were served at the Peace, Love & a New Library festival.

“We are honored to say thank you to Steve and David for their love of community and family,” Friends president Shirley Rash said.

The Stubbs brothers received a perpetual plaque that hangs prominently at the library. They also received a Certificate of Appreciation along with a complimentary oneyear membership to the Friends of the Berryville Library, Inc. They will also receive a $50 award that will be donated to a charity of their choice.

If you are interested in making a nomination or would like to become a member of the Friends of the Berryville Library, contact the library at 870423-2323 or stop by 104 Spring St. in Berryville.
