Berryville School District Superintendent Owen Powell said if Mother Nature was going to pick a district building to damage in last week’s storms, she picked the right one.
“If we could’ve picked a building for it to hit that would’ve been the one,” Powell said of an older building used for storage which had its roof ripped off during a severe storm on Wednesday, April 5.
The damaged building was used as a general storage area for the district, but once housed the district’s elementary school.
“We were very fortunate that we don’t have students in that building any longer,” Powell said. “It’s just used as storage.
“We’re just very fortunate, number one, the timing of the storm that came through came through right around 6 a.m. or maybe a little bit before so we didn’t have any students or staff on campus at the time that it came through. Very fortunate from that. And then, of course, we don’t have classrooms in there anymore.”
Powell said the building will likely be demolished, something that was already on the agenda.
“We’re probably going to look at demoing the building,” he said. “It’s actually been on a list of ours for a number of years to bring down.
“When we were building our new high school and adding on to the middle school, part of the partnership agreement that we had with the state is that our older buildings, we can’t house students in those anymore. That building was one of those and we had plans to demolish it at some point. Now is probably going to be that time.”
