Special election Nov. 18 on GF millage increase

Posted

A special election to decide on a proposed millage increase in the Green Forest School District will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18, with early voting beginning Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The school district is seeking a six-mill increase in order to help fund a $25 million facility across the street from the current high school that would house students in grades 7 through 12.

The school district has been approved to received $9.99 million in state funding for the project.

According to information provided by Green Forest superintendent David Gilmore, Green Forest’s current tax rate of 36 mills is the lowest among 12 schools either in Carroll County or in the Tigers’ athletic conference.

Berryville, which has completed an array of building projects over the years, has a millage rate of 42.2 while Eureka Springs is at 36.1.

The new building would replace the existing high school building and also would help eliminate the need for portable buildings that have been on the Green Forest campus since at least 1989.

Millage taxes are calculated based on assessed property values, with one mill equaling $1 for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. Assessed values are 20 percent of a property’s appraised market value.

Early voting in the special election will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Wednesday, Nov. 12, through Friday, Nov. 14, and Monday, Nov. 17. Early voting will be available at 802 Broadway Ave. in Green Forest, which is a new early voting location.

The deadline to register to vote in the special election is Thursday, Oct. 20. To check your voter registration, visit https://www.voterview. ar-nova.org.
