It was a good week for Berryville’s Smith sisters.
The Lady Bobcats’ Kaylyn Smith, a junior, and her younger sister, Kinly, a sophomore, both set personal records as Berryville competed in the Goblin Relays on Tuesday, April 8, at Harrison, and the Gentry Pioneer Relays two days later at Gentry.
Kaylyn Smith triple jumped 34 feet, 6.5 inches at the Harrison meet to not only set a new personal record but top the previous school record of 33-10.5 set by Cecilia Doss, who is now the Lady Bobcats’ coach. Smith finished second in the event.
On Thursday, April 10, Kinly Smith threw the shot put 35 feet, 2 inches at the Pioneer Relays. Smith took second place and prequalified for the Class 4A state meet. Her throw might also be a school record, although that wasn’t immediately confirmed.
Kinly Smith had an outstanding all-around day at the Harrison meet. She won both the discus (79-2) and the shot put (30-7.5). In addition to taking second place in the triple jump, Kaylyn Smith was second in the 400-meter dash (1:08.88) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (29.66). Berryville sophomore Kai Killingsworth took third in the 800-meter run (2:44.93) and fourth in the 1,600 (6:09.00). The Lady Bobcats’ Chaney Fairweather, a junior, was fourth in the high jump (4-8) and fifth in both the 400-meter dash (1:12.07) and the long jump (14-5). Senior Sophie Bartos finished fifth in the discus (69-3).
The Lady Bobcats finished second in the 4X100-meter relay (57.96).
Junior Kale Smith led the Berryville boys at the Harrison meet, taking third place in the 100-meter dash (11.85) and the long jump (18-10) and finishing fifth in the triple jump (37-3.75). Senior Malachi Houghton took fourth place in the 1,600-meter run (5:02.16), while junior Zander Borkowski was fifth in the 400-meter dash (58.09). Berryville finished third in the boys 4X800 relay (9:28.70) and fifth in the 4X400 (4:14.31).
Berryville was second in the girls team standings and sixth in boys team standings.
At the Gentry meet, Fairweather finished third in the girls high jump (4-8). Kaylyn Smith was fifth in the triple jump (32-6).
