Shots won’t fall for Lady Bobcats

Early in the third quarter of Berryville’s game against Huntsville in the 4A-1 district tournament at Bobcat Arena, things seemed to be going the Lady Bobcats’ way.

Berryville scored seven consecutive points to turn a twopoint halftime deficit into a four-point lead. Then, the shots stopped falling for the Lady Bobcats.

Berryville went scoreless for more than four minutes and Huntsville took advantage on the way to a 43-36 win that ended the Lady Bobcats’ season.

“We got the game where we thought we needed it,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “And then we just could not make the critical shots. We got good looks and the darn ball just wouldn’t go in the hole.”

The Lady Bobcats had several open shots that looked like good opportunities.

“I thought the girls took good shots,” Cornelison said. “I thought we did a lot of things right defensively. You hold them to 43 points, you feel good about that. It’s kind of the story of our year. When the ball went through the basket, we had a real good chance of winning and when it didn’t, we didn’t. Really relying on perimeter shooting is pretty difficult.”

Senior Hannah Youngblood led the Lady Bobcats with 11 points and classmate Mia Thurman added nine.

With two returning starters in freshman Kaylyn Smith and sophomore Kynadee Hopper and a full summer for sophomore Taelor Tomlinson — a starter as a freshman last season — to continue her comeback from a torn ACL, as well as an influx of talent from a junior high team that went 17-5 and finished second in the district tournament, Cornelison said the program is in good shape.

“I’m really excited about where our program is right now,” he said.
