The Berryville Bobcats had plenty of opportunities to score in last Friday’s game against Gentry at Bobcat Stadium. They just couldn’t get the ball across the goal line.
Berryville failed to score on four possessions inside the Pioneers’ 10-yard line as undefeated Gentry beat the Bobcats 35-0.
“Stopped inside the 1 twice, fumbled once — he was down on the film but they called a fumble — and a penalty backed us up,” Berryville coach Bryan Hutson said. “So we just didn’t convert when we had a chance. And against good football teams you’ve got to be able to do that.”
Hutson said the Bobcats have a chance to win some games if they can take advantage of opportunities to score.
“That’s what I told the kids,” he said. “I told them at halftime and after the game. We just found a way to use both shotguns and shoot off our toes. We’re just snakebit right there. But our kids competed. It’s right there. We just can’t get over that hump right now.”
Things won’t get any easier for the Bobcats (1-4, 0-2 4A-1) this week as they face another high-scoring conference opponent, traveling to Elkins. The Elks (4-1, 2-0) are coming off a 41-0 victory over Huntsville and are averaging 41.2 points per game.
“They’re really good,” said Hutson, who coached at Elkins before coming to Berryville. “They’re one of the top teams around, so our work’s cut out for us.”
