Rat Race set Saturday in Green Forest

Posted

The annual Rat Race 5K kicks off Saturday, June 25, in Green Forest, and like most years, there are several options for runners, walkers and dog owners.

In addition, this year’s event features a weeklong display of the Arkansas Run for the Fallen Traveling Memorial on the football field at Bill Gotto Stadium.

The annual race honors the memory of Green Forest native and U.S. Navy SEAL Tommy Ratzlaff, along with 30 others who died during a 2011 mission when the helicopter they were riding in was shot down over Afghanistan.

As in previous years, the race will begin and end at Green Forest High School on Tommy Ratzlaff Avenue, with final registration beginning at 7 a.m. the day of the race. An opening ceremony is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. and the race is set to begin at 8:06 a.m.

Early online registration for the 5K, along with Bart’s Dog Jog and a virtual 5K, is already underway at www. ratzlegacy.org and will end at 11:59 p.m., Thursday, June 23.

The entry fee for each event is $30. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female runners, along with certificates in nine age groups. Team entries of four or more will receive a $10 discount on registration fees.

Proceeds from this race will benefit the Ratzlaff Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Good Grief Programs in area schools.

Meanwhile at the football field, the Arkansas Run for the Fallen Traveling Memorial will remain on display through June 25 and visitors may view it at any time. The memorial consists of a U.S. flag and placard with a short biography for each Arkansas service member who has died while serving on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001.

The mission of Arkansas Run for the Fallen, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, is to provide support, hope and healing to the families grieving the death of a loved one in military service, regardless of relationship or circumstance of death.

Donations are appreciated, and all funds are used to maintain and display the memorial and honor Gold Star Families throughout the year. Through donations, the organization also has provided college scholarships for Gold Star children, host special family days to honor the families of Arkansas fallen military service members, provide funds for the Gold Star Kids Camp for the children of Arkansas fallen military service members and sponsor wreaths for Arkansas veteran cemeteries as part of the Wreaths Across America program.
