Green Forest will host the annual Rat Race 5K on Saturday, June 6, honoring the memory of Navy SEAL Tommy Ratzlaff and 30 others who died in Afghanistan in 2011.
The race, which began in 2013, raises funds to support scholarships for local students as well as helping to provide counseling for students who have lost a parent or caregiver.
A highlight of this year’s event will be the return of the Extortion 17 Hero Stones from the Fearless Rock Memorial in Lake Ouachita.
Extortion 17 was the name of the helicopter that Ratzlaff and the others were aboard when it was shot down over Afghanistan in August 2011.
During Saturday’s race, participants will have the opportunity to select and carry a Hero Stone throughout the 5K as a personal gesture of remembrance and tribute to the fallen.
