In one sense, Tommy Ratzlaff has been gone for almost 14 years now — since that fateful day in August 2011 when he and 30 others perished when their military helicopter was shot down over Afghanistan.
In a greater sense, however, Ratzlaff’s memory and legacy live on in his hometown.
On Saturday, June 21, Green Forest once again hosted the annual Rat Race 5K in honor of Ratzlaff, a Navy SEAL who was killed on Aug. 6, 2011. The Rat Race began in 2013 and raises funds to support scholarships for local students as well as help provide counseling for students who have lost a parent or caregiver.
Saturday’s event once again drew hundreds of participants, from hard-core runners to walkers who simply wanted to show their support.
Arauny Reyes, who won multiple state track and field championships at Green Forest High School before graduating in May, was the overall race winner for the second consecutive year.
Cecilia Doss was the women’s winner.
