The annual Rat Race 5K was held Saturday, June 22, in Green Forest, with several options for runners, walkers and dog owners. The 5K race began in front of the Grim Gym on Ratzlaff Avenue and ended inside Tiger Stadium. The annual race honors the memory of Green Forest native and U.S. Navy SEAL Tommy Ratzlaff, along with 30 others who died during a 2011 mission when the helicopter they were riding in was shot down over Afghanistan. A total of 294 people participated, including virtual runners who registered and participated in another location. The event also included a raffle for several items with winning tickets drawn Carroll County Queens Ruthie Joy Smith, Elin Powell, Jessica Morin Leal and Johnesse Smalley. The winner of a Custom Rugar SFAR valued at $2,200 was Jenner Jones. Don Moffitt won a Heritage 22 Revolver donated by Berryville Pawn. Alan Hunnicutt won two rounds of golf plus cart donated by Berryville Country Club. Michael Murphy and Kaven Maybee won $25 gift certificates donated by Hatman’s Hangout. Joe Faria won a guitar case donated by Tim the Music Guy of Berryville. All proceeds from the Rat Race and this year’s raffle are used to support scholarships for area high school seniors and the “Sharing our Strength — Good Grief” programs at local schools. Since its inception, the Ratzlaff Legacy Foundation, a 501(c )(3) nonprofit organization, has given more than $40,000 in scholarships. This year’s scholarships were presented to Gina Gonzalez and Jacob Manuel of Green Forest. The foundation also has sponsored several area schools in the Sharing our Strength – Good Grief programs. This program supports children in local schools who have lost a parent or primary caregiver. Students are told of the commonalities they share in attending Good Grief programs; however the focus of this group is not sadness or grieving, but realizing the participants are not alone, finding resources and developing a support system, while counselors encourage opportunities to remember, validate feelings and listen.
