The annual Rat Race 5K kicks off Saturday, June 22, in Green Forest, with several options for runners, walkers and dog owners.
The annual race honors the memory of Green Forest native and U.S. Navy SEAL Tommy Ratzlaff, along with 30 others who died during a 2011 mission when the helicopter they were riding in was shot down over Afghanistan.
As in previous years, the race will begin and end at Green Forest High School on Tommy Ratzlaff Avenue, with final registration beginning at 7 a.m. the day of the race. An opening ceremony is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. and the race is set to begin at 8:06 a.m.
Early online registration for the 5K, along with Bart’s Dog Jog and a virtual 5K, is underway at www.ratzlegacy.org and will end at noon Thursday, June 20.
The entry fee for each event is $35. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female runners, along with certificates in nine age groups. Team entries of four or more will receive a $10 discount on registration fees.
All entrants in the 5K, the Bart’s Dog Jog and the virtual 5K will receive T-shirts and a swag bag.
In addition, raffle tickets are available for prizes including a Ruger Small Frame Autoloading Rifle with sights and custom paint and a Rawhide single-action revolver. Raffle tickets are $20 each.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Ratzlaff Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Good Grief Programs in area schools.
