The Carroll County Quorum Court approved a resolution at its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 17, to allow Messer LLC to participate in the Tax Back program, part of an investment incentive package offered by the Arkansas Economic Development Commission to help attract new businesses to the state.
Messer, headquartered in Bad Soden, Germany, recently broke ground on a $70 million, state-of-the-art air separation unit in the Berryville business park.
Under the Tax Back program. qualified businesses can receive sales and use tax refunds on the purchase of building materials and taxable machinery and equipment. The program is one of several incentives offered by the AEDC.
In order to participate in the program, businesses must obtain a resolution from a local governing authority authorizing the refund of its local taxes. The quorum court resolution means Messer will be eligible to receive a refund of county sales tax during construction of its Berryville facility.
Berryville Mayor Tim McKinney addressed the quorum court and urged the nine justices of the peace in attendance to approve the resolution, saying it was necessary for Berryville and Carroll County to remain competitive in attracting new businesses.
All the JPs in attendance voted in favor of the resolution with the exception of District 10 JP Jerry King, who voted “present.”
District 2 JP Bruce Wright was absent. The District 1 seat remains vacant after the retirement of longtime JP Jack Deaton.
