Quality over quantity for BV wrestlers

Depth might be an issue for the Berryville wrestling team, but coach Ryan Whetham said there’s no shortage of talent or work ethic on the Bobcats’ roster.

“We’ve got a bunch of new, young kids, ninth-graders and a few 10th-graders that have never wrestled before, and that’s good for our future,” Whetham said. “We don’t have a single junior. We have three seniors — Tun Oo, Jarrett Mann and Dominic Alvarado.

“We don’t have a full 14-man roster,” Whetham said. “I think we will Jan. 1, because we’re waiting on some kids to get reassessed because their body fat was so low that they had to go to the doctor and get cleared for that, which is not a big deal. That happens when kids are 110 pounds and less than 7 percent body fat. It’s a health precaution more than anything.”

Whetham said several wrestlers have left the team, but those who remain have shown up to practice ready to work.

“The kids that have been here, they’ve been really solid,” Whetham said. “They’ve been at practice. They’re not making excuses.”

Alvarado won the state Class 4A championship in the 113-pound weight class last year. Oo took third place in the 170-pound class as a sophomore in 2021.

This season, Alvarado is competing in the 126-pound class while Oo is wrestling in the 190-pound class.

Berryville will host a dual meet Tuesday against Rogers and Mountain Home.
