The Green Forest Tigers’ blueprint for the future under first-year head coach Dalton Ewing is to run the ball and play hard-nosed defense.
In its conference opener against Prairie Grove last week, Green Forest got a long look at how powerful that combination can be.
Prairie Grove scored the game’s first five touchdowns to grab a big lead before halftime and went on to a 50-7 victory at Green Forest’s Tiger Stadium.
“They’ve been running that forever,” Ewing said of Prairie Grove’s Wing T offense. “They’ve perfected it as much as you can perfect something.”
Green Forest was playing without its starting quarterback and two starting halfbacks. Green Forest scored its only touchdown on a 1-yard run by sophomore quarterback Hadley Maybee with 17 seconds left in the first half. Sophomore Abisai Reyes added the extra-point kick to pull Green Forest within 34-7.
“We’re pretty banged up,” Ewing said. Still, Ewing said the Tigers (2-2, 0-1 4A-1) are still focused on trying to reach the state playoffs.
“One conference loss doesn’t kill you,” Ewing said. “Our goal and what we want to reach is still reachable. Our kids are still excited to get there.”
Green Forest will travel to Gravette for a conference matchup on Friday, Oct. 3. The Lions (3-1, 1-0) opened 4A-1 play with a 52-0 victory at Lincoln last week.
“Gravette’s offense is a little bit different,” Ewing said of the Lions’ Spread scheme. “I feel like if our kids play well and we can stay healthy, we should be able to compete this week.”
