Odds are good that Harding Academy’s girls soccer team will be competing in Class 4A next season. They won’t be missed in Green Forest.
For the second consecutive season, Harding Academy spoiled Green Forest’s dreams of a state championship — this time with a 4-1 win over the Lady Tigers in the semifinals of the Class 3A state tournament Saturday in Harrison.
Saturday’s game was a rematch of the 2021 Class 3A state championship game, which Harding Academy won 6-2.
Green Forest coach Ashley Wilson said a combination of circumstances seemed to affect her team’s performance.
“Playing three games three days a row in the heat, and that much heat, is very exhausting,” she said. “Also, Friday night we had graduation, a variety of factors. There might have been a little bit of intimidation but there was also a determination due to the fact that we were playing Harding. We just seemed like we couldn’t quite keep it together.”
Junior Emily Lozano had Green Forest’s only goal against Harding Academy after scoring a total of nine in the Lady Tigers’ first two games in state tournament play. She finished the season with 47 goals.
Green Forest advanced to the semifinals with a pair of shutout victories in the first two rounds.
On Thursday, May 12, junior Emily Lozano poured in five goals to lead the Lady Tigers to a 16-0 rout of Mountain View. Lozano had four goals in the first half as Green Forest raced out to a 14-0 lead by intermission.
Sanda Win and Myndy Zamora added two goals apiece for Green Forest. Stephanie Lopez, Samantha Delavin, Hanya Fuentes, Samantha Uvieta, Kayla Lozano, Kimberly Lozano and Blanca Galindo added one goal apiece as a total of 10 Lady Tigers got in the scoring column.
The Lady Tigers shut out another opponent on Friday, May 13, eliminating Cossatot River with a 6-0 quarterfinal victory. Emily Lozano led the offense again for Green Forest, scoring four times to increase her total to nine goals in two state tournament games. Galindo and Fuentes also scored for the Lady Tigers.
Wilson said she was disappointed for the team’s seniors, who won’t get another opportunity to pursue a state title.
“Eight seniors,” Wilson said. “They’re going to be greatly missed.”
