Attention all Pre-K children and your parents: Berryville Library has created a new program just for you.
In addition to the Thursday morning Pre-K Storytime hour, make plans to come play at the Berryville Library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday.
Parents, this is play with a purpose! Each activity is selected to reinforce skills that have been proved to boost cognitive development and increase a preschooler’s readiness to learn and thrive in school. But, most importantly, each activity will be full of fun for both parent and preschooler.
“The idea for the program came through a workshop called Reimagining School Readiness,” said library director Julie Hall. “It is based on research done in California by the Bay Area Discovery Museum on how public libraries can extend the role they play in increasing school readiness among children by focusing on developmental skills aside from just literacy.”
The library was able to participate in this workshop because it is an active member of the Arkansas Discovery Network.
The Berryville Library joined the network in 2016 as the first non-museum member. Participation in this network has given library staff the access to training and STEM resources needed to be able to increase the number and quality of STEAM programs offered at the library. Creation Station and Lab Rats are other Berryville Library programs created specifically from trainings received through the network.
Program facilitator Jennifer Geeo explained that, during last week’s Playtime, the preschoolers were taking flashlights and shining them on toy dinosaurs to make shadows big and small. She uses three key phrases in all Playtime programs: I Wonder, I Notice, and Tell Me More. Repetitive use of these key words allows for advanced dialogue with the children as they explore and discover new things about the world around them, like what shining a flashlight will do to a dinosaur, how dinosaurs moved and what you can do to make the shadows look differently.
Marcie Ellis, a mother of a 3-year-old, said she came because her son Titus Joe has always enjoyed the Thursday morning Storytime and because he is so social, he enjoys visiting with others in his age group. Carla Youngblood was there with her great-grandchild and said her great-granddaughter loves coming to the library because of the activities. Amy Wilson, mother of two, said her children just love coming to the library to see other children and to participate in all the activities.
The Tuesday Playtime and Thursday Storytime programs for preschool age children are all free. Be sure to bring your child, grandchild, niece or nephew.
