First-year Green Forest boys soccer coach Adam Richter says he has “high hopes” for the Tigers this spring, with good reason.
Green Forest is just two years removed from winning the Class 3A state championship. Last year’s team reached the state semifinals, and Richter said there is plenty of talent on this season’s roster as well.
“The team has a lot of returning players who have good experience and lots of skill with the ball,” Richter said. “We also had some incredibly skilled freshmen try out this year that have seen a lot of playing time. I’m lucky to be their coach.”
One player the Tigers will be counting on is senior forward Izaak Merida.
“I have high expectations for him this year,” Richter said. “Last year he had a high number of goals and we are hoping to see the same from him this season.”
Two freshmen, Jafet Fuentes and Milton Ortiz, will be in the Tigers’ starting lineup.
“They have been very impressive so far,” Richter said. Green Forest’s varsity outscored Berryville 2-1 in the second half of a scrimmage on Feb. 21 and the Tigers defeated Springdale Har-Ber’s junior varsity 3-1 last week.
A game against Bentonville’s varsity on Wednesday, March 2, was called because of inclement weather with the Tigers trailing 2-0 at halftime.
“I was impressed with how we were composed against a strong 6A team,” Richter said. “We are hoping to reschedule the match later in the season.”
Green Forest was scheduled to play at Haas Hall Rogers on Monday. The Tigers will travel to Decatur on Thursday.
