Mountain View strikes early, holds off Bobcats

The good news for the Berryville Bobcats is they held Mountain View to 10 points over the final three and a half quarters of last Friday’s season opener at Bobcat Stadium.

The bad news is, the damage had already been done.

Mountain View scored two touchdowns in less than six minutes to open the game and went on to defeat Berryville 24-7.

“We played one of the worst games we’ve played since I’ve been here,” said second-year Berryville head coach Macklin Chermak. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t get things going and we just didn’t click as a team at all.”

The Yellowjackets, who went 19-0 and won back-to-back state championships in eight-man football the past two years, jumped out quickly in their return to the 11-man game. Mountain View scored on a 75-yard run on the third play from scrimmage, then came up with a fourthdown sack to get the ball back and scored two plays on a 52-yard run for a 14-0 lead with 6:17 remaining in the first quarter.

Berryville junior Kale Smith intercepted a pass and returned it 90-plus yards to the Mountain View end zone on the Yellowjackets’ next possession, but the Bobcats were flagged for an illegal block on the return and took possession at their own 30. On the next play, Berryville fumbled the ball and Mountain View recovered.

Berryville scored its only touchdown midway through the second quarter when sophomore running back John Butler broke free for a 39-yard TD run. Valentin Trujillo’s extra point pulled the Bobcats within 14-7 with 4:59 left in the first half.

On Berryville’s first possession of the third quarter, a pass was tipped and intercepted. Mountain View took possession at the Bobcats’ 20, but could only get to the 16. From there, a 33-yard fieldgoal attempt missed, but a penalty gave Mountain View a first down. On fourth-andgoal from the 5, Berryville was whistled for an offsides penalty that moved the ball to the 2. Mountain View connected for a touchdown pass on the next play. The extra point extended the Yellowjackets’ lead to 21-7 with 7:29 remaining in the third quarter.

“It was our first game,” Chermak said. “So we had our mistakes. That comes to (a lack of discipline). … First game, we got the jitters out, got the mistakes out. So we come back together, fix the mistakes and go take it to Greenland.”

Mountain View added a 26-yard field goal with 4:42 left in the game.

Chermak said Berryville’s coaches met with position groups over the weekend.

“We put a lot of work in this weekend with all the players and coaches and hopefully we can get this thing on the right track,” he said.

Berryville will host Greenland on Friday, Sept. 13, at Bobcat Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Greenland was off last week after losing to Lincoln, 47-20, on Aug. 30.

The Pirates beat Berryville 14-7 last season. “Obviously, Greenland’s very good,” Chermak said. “I think it’s been a while since we beat Greenland. They’ve got a lot of skill over there. We’re going to try to slow them down and shorten the game a little bit. Hopefully we can score enough and hold them to enough where we can win the game.”
