Coach Joe Mills came to Berryville in 1967 and chose to never leave. He coached both high school and junior high football, baseball, track and cross country.
Coach Mills had a career that ran from 1967 to 1996, with a long list of accomplishments.
Coach Mills was raised in Sulphur Springs, where he played baseball and basketball. After his high school graduation in 1954, he joined the United States Army for a two-year stint. He then used his G. I. Bill to attend the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
After graduating in 1967, Joe met Jack Edens at a ballgame during the summer. Coach Edens advised Joe to apply for a job in Berryville. Coach Mills took the suggestion and his career as a Bobcat coach began.
A list of some of Coach Mills accomplishments and awards would include:
• 1973 State Champions Class A Jr. Track
• 1984 Outstanding Football Coach Jr. High
• 1984-85 Outstanding Boys Baseball Coach
• 1985 Outstanding Football Coach 1-AA Junior High
• 1986 Outstanding Track Coach 1AA Junior Boys
• 1989 NFICA Outstanding Coach Boys Cross Country
• 1991 Outstanding Coach 1AA Senior Boys
• 42 game winning streak in junior high football Even with his busy coaching schedule, Coach Mills found the time to serve his community for a decade as a Justice of the Peace. Coach Mills is spending his retirement years still living in Berryville.
