Mayor Tim McKinney told the Berryville City Council at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 6, that he’ll work with economic development director Dean Lee and administrative assistant Jay Lee to draft a proposed ordinance regarding business licenses in the city.
McKinney had told the council in December that he would like for the city to begin issuing business licenses, saying other cities in the area already do so.
At the Jan. 6 meeting, council members were provided with a written overview explaining the potential benefits of requiring business licenses.
“I don’t know if any of you all have any input you’d like to add to that,” McKinney said. “… We’ve looked at a lot of different cities and I think we’ve got a pretty good plan. If the council doesn’t have any objections, I might just work with Dean and Jay and go ahead and get a draft ordinance drawn up where you can kind of see.”
McKinney said the city would keep license fees “as cheap as possible.”
The document provided to council members said fees for a business license would begin at $50 and increase based on the number of full- and parttime employees at each business.
The Berryville City Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at City Hall.
