Library kicks off summer reading program

Posted

It is time to sign up for summer reading at your local library.

This year, the Berryville Library invites readers of all ages to participate in the Summer Reading on the Move challenge.  The library will be moving to its new location at 207 Springfield St. later this year. This summer, the library is asking this question: Can Berryville read as many books as the library will be moving?

The reading challenge started May 18 and runs through July 10. Sign up by visiting the library at 104 Spring St. or downloading the challenge instruction booklet at www.berryvillelibrary.org. Readers will set a goal for the number of books they can read this summer. Starting Monday, June 1, readers can start reporting their reading numbers to the library weekly for small rewards.

Reading for fun is a traditional summer activity for many. It is also a very important one. Reading test scores have been on the decline for more than a decade, causing some to declare our country officially in a “reading recession.” Reading regularly, even just small amounts each day, is one of the best ways to improve overall reading ability. Library reading challenges can help make this fun for students of all ages. Parents and community members are encouraged to participate as well, to show kids that reading is important for everyone.

From June 1 to July 20, the Berryville Library will also host a free family show at 1 p.m. each Monday at the Berryville High School Performing Arts Center. The Discovery Center of Springfield will kick off this series with Matter Magic, a program full of science demonstrations and fun facts. Other performers include Spoon Man, Still on the Hill, Regalia International Birds of Prey and Opera in the Ozarks. Details about all eight shows scheduled for this summer are available at the library.

For more information about the Berryville Library’s summer reading challenge and June programs, please visit the library at 104 Spring St. or call 870-423-2323.
