Do you have a story to tell or are you interested in what it takes to become a local author and have a book published?
Join the Friends of the Berryville Library and the Carroll County Historical and Genealogy Society for a morning with Berryville native and local author Dale Ross as he discusses his most recent book, “A Voice for Ira.” The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Berryville Community Center.
There is no fee to attend, light refreshments will be served, and books will be available for purchase. A free booklet, “Remember the Time,” with prompts for saving family stories will be given to all attendees.
Make plans now to spend a relaxed morning with Dale and learn firsthand what inspired him as a writer while having the opportunity to ask questions about what it takes to get a book published.
Ross is also deeply interested in the history of Carroll County. He serves on the board of directors for the Carroll County Historical and Genealogy Society and manages the Downhome Carroll County Facebook page, offering citizens the ability to reminisce over photos from long ago and remember iconic businesses, families and events.
The Friends of the Library want to foster a passion for reading and writing for all ages.
“Writing allows a story to be told and our community is rich with history,” said Berryville Library director Julie Hall. “We want to preserve those stories for generations to come through the library’s Legacy Project.”
The Legacy project will be part of the proposed new library design in which a gift of $10,000 earns the right to name and place a picture or or collection of pictures that highlight the heritage of a family and/ or business on end caps on the bookshelves in the main area.
“Having author events such as the one featuring Dale Ross may inspire others to develop their writing skills with publishing in mind or spark ideas for creating coffee table books to give at the holidays,” said Friends vice president Elaine Floyd.
Legacy photo books will be on display during the event, along with other resources available through the Berryville Library.
Dale and his wife, Judith, now live in Rogers. Both are graduates of Berryville High School. Dale sits on the Board of Directors for the Carroll County Historical and Genealogy Society and is second vice president of the board. Dale is a historian, author and freelance writer for publications in Carroll County. He wrote the book, “A Voice For Ira,” which details the events of Ira Gurley’s death. Dale also created and maintains the Facebook page, “Carroll County Arkansas History Buffs.” which has a membership nearing 5,000.
In 1999, Dale was hired at the Sherwood Police Department. After more than 10 years as Officer Ross, Dale retired from police work in 2010. A lesson learned at the police department was to never assume, and never accept statements at face value. This lesson came in handy during the writing of “A Voice For Ira.”
Dale and Judith have three grown children and three grandchildren. Dale is an avid Razorback fan, and enjoys exploring the Ozarks with his wife, Judith.
Come on out and spend the morning with us and learn what inspires him to do what he does!
